Quintas

One of the key factors in securing the on- going quality of our Ports is to have total control over every aspect of production. The purchase of Quinta da Gricha and Quinta do Rio, quintas which now provide the backbone of our Vintage Ports, has helped us achieve this control."

These two remarkable properties whose style of port complement each other, are prime Grade A vineyards, in production since the early 1800s with unique soil and microclimate.

Quinta da Gricha is situated on the south bank of the River Douro about five miles upriver from Pinhão. With a northerly and relatively cool exposure, this 200 acre estate produces a port with its own distinctive style: deep and lively colour with intense aroma of blueberries and solid tannic structure.

Quinta do Rio is situated in a 40 acre vineyard in the heart of the Rio Torto valley. Rio faces South and with low lying terraces, the vineyard has an extremely hot exposure. This is reflected in its port: Rio produces a rich jammy style of port with masses of concentrated fruit flavours.

The ports from these new quintas are fruit driven, contrasting with the earthier style of wines from Quinta da Agua Alta.

Wine Spectator's Special Report on the 2000 Vintage shows that these qualities are bringing a more defined signature to Churchill's port.

Single Quinta Vintage Port

Although more approachable than the Churchill's Vintage Port blend, our Single Quinta Vintage Ports offer an alternative style of Vintage Port of no less quality. They are distinctively individual in style and will mature at an earlier age.
