Douro Port and table wines now have a new home in Vila Nova de Gaia. With the recent inauguration of the Churchill’s Visitors Centre the opportunity has been given for a much closer acquaintance with the wines from the Douro region: this is a space which breathes elegance and style, serving as a backdrop for the best Churchill's has to offer – its wines.

Located at the company's headquarters in Vila Nova de Gaia, the centre occupies an area of 350 sq. metres and has involved an investment of over 400 thousand euros. Open to visitors from 10h00 to 19h00 daily, a variety of tasting options is available to suit the requirements of all visitors.

Churchill’s Visiting Centre was born out of the desire to create a specific reception area which would not only provide a much wider showcase for the company’s wines and products but which would also appeal to the general public, playing a part in building a closer link with the community.

For some time the company had recorded a growing public demand for tastings of their wide range of wines. According to company director Maria Emilia Campos: “Churchill's thinking behind this venture was based upon the concept that enjoyment of a glass of Port requires a state of wellbeing. This new space will provide a stage where the public in general can learn more about the production and development of a wide range of high quality wines”.

With innovation in mind, the Churchill's Visitors Centre offers a rare opportunity for Vintage tastings, focusing on the singular and unique characteristics of this product which is generally considered to be one of the great Wines of the World.

For those keen to widen their knowledge of Port wine, daily tastings can be organized by prior booking, for a minimum of five people. These technical tastings will be conducted by qualified Churchill professionals and will allow an insight into the fascinating and glamorous world of Port wines and the opportunity to learn and distinguish between their various styles. Tourist tastings include the combined advantage of a personalised tasting,  complemented by specially-prepared ipad technology.

PARALLEL ACTIVITIES

Gastronomy will also have an important role to play at the Churchill’s Visitors Centre. Cookery courses and demonstrations will help emphasise the perfect symbiosis between Churchill wines, flavours and aromas. Above all the aim will be to show visitors that Churchill’s wines make the perfect accompaniment for a wide variety of dishes and that each meal in itself should become a special and memorable moment.

To illustrate the harmony between Portuguese cuisine and the wines of the Douro, Churchill's will be inviting some of the country's most distinguished chefs to delight visitors with an opportunity to become familiar with the very best of Portuguese gastronomy. Our first guest will be Chef Vitor Sobral, whose already extremely successful cookery courses will be available for those wishing to enroll.

The Visitors Centre is equipped to arrange group dinners for up to 40 people and the space itself is also available for meetings, seminars, workshops, training or presentations.

With the true Port Wine connoisseur in mind, Churchill has introduced an exclusive new glass for tasting and enjoying Port Wine. This hand-made glass allows all the unique characteristics of a fine Port Wine to be appreciated to the full.

In an effort to ensure that drinking Port Wine becomes an ever-more pleasurable act of elegance, distinction and sophistication, Churchill's has given birth to an exclusive glass for the delight of the true Port Wine connoisseur. With a tulip-shaped bowl and finest calibre glass, it has the slenderest of round stems, creating an immediate impression of lightness and elegance.

Churchill's chose to reproduce the style of a precious old wine calice which had been discovered amongst family treasures and, in collaboration with Schott Zweisel, created a glass of Tritan Crystal, completely free of both lead and barium, besides being 60% more resistant and long lasting than lead crystal.

For those who have never accompanied their dessert with a good port, Churchill's are launching an innovate campaign in a number of restaurants throughout the country. The idea is to encourage clients to experiment with the delightful harmony of flavours produced by the dessert of their choice with the new 20cl bottle of Churchill's Reserve Port.

“Reserve Port” is a Churchill's Port produced exclusively from letter “A” grapes, the finest that the Douro produces. Churchill's is the only company producing all its Ports solely from “A” grapes. This is a young (four-year-old) Port, with structure and fruitiness of a new vintage. Given that it needs no decanting it is ideally suited for serving in restaurants and bars.
